Perpetual
Succour Hospital (PSH) has been renowned in the
VisMin area to spearhead the use of state-of-the-art
equipments and for exploring advancements in medicine.
PSH has made another breakthrough in patient care.
True to its promise in providing its patients a
globally competitive and holistic care, PSH is now
starting "A Child Life Program" in partnership
with the Kythe Foundation. This clearly embodies
PSH's relentless commitment to provide excellent
service to the Cebuanos and Cebu's visitors from
the VisMin region. |

Kythe
Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit organization
based in Manila, supports the "Child Life
Program" in the following hospitals: AFP
Medical Center, National Kidney and Transplant
Institute, Quirino Memorial Medical Center, National
Children's Hospital, UST Charity Hospital, Philippine
Orthopedic Center, Tarlac Provincial Hospital
and Davao Medical Center. The "Child Life
Program" aims to address the psychosocial
needs of pediatric patients and their families
particularly those afflicted with chronic illness.
The program is designed to help the pediatric
patient cope with the stress and anxiety of the
hospital experience therefore minimizing psychological
trauma. Furthermore, the "Child Life Program"
promotes normal growth and development and maintains
the child and family's normal living pattern.
|
| |
The
services that the program offers to the pediatric
patients and their families accommodated in the
pedia ward, surgical pedia ward and Cebu Cancer
Institute are:
1. Assessment of the Psychosocial needs of the
pediatric patient and their family
2. Age-appropriate planning, intervention and
evaluation
Possible interventions;
" Education
about the illness
" Preparation
for medical procedures (includes medical play)
" Assistance
during medical procedures (teach coping skills)
" Integrated
reading program
" Therapeutic
play either at bedside or at the play area
" Hospice Care
(which includes anticipatory grief counseling)
3. Celebrate life parties
|
| |
For
the out-patient pediatric patients and their families,
the following are the services offered at PSH's
Out-Patient Department:
1. Reach out and read program - parents will be
educated on the value of reading to their children
even at a young age.
2. Parent education on the following; nutrition,
sanitation, infant massage, etc.
3. Preparation for medical procedures
4. Assistance during medical procedures (teach
coping skills and distraction techniques)
|
| |
What
puts premium to the program is the fact that the
child is not the only beneficiary but also his/her
family, doctors and caregivers. The family members
of the pedia patient will be helped with accepting
the fate of the child aside from educating them
on how to handle different situations. The program
also helps the doctors and caregivers understand
the child's situation in the child's point of
view. With the "Child Life Program"
everyone is in a win-win situation. It maximizes
the service time of the doctors, nurses and technicians
and consequentially lessens tantrums, spitting
and hair pulling on the side of the patient.
